SECTION TITLE: Keep the Promise
"...We know what needs to be done. The lessons of best practice are summarised in the declaration. We must go home and implement..."

(Extract from UK Statement
on the adoption of
the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS,
June 2001)

The UK AIDS and Human Rights Project supports the World AIDS Campaign (WAC).

WAC has launched a 5-year Strategy, "STOP AIDS. KEEP THE PROMISE", calling for Governments to honour their commitments in relation to HIV and AIDS.

WAC has published a report "Promises, Promises", which closely examines AIDS statements, commitments and declarations by governments and the United Nations (UN) in the past five years, and asks how they hold up under scrutiny as genuine "promises". Click here to download the report.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on 23 December 2005, calling for a comprehensive review of the progress made in implementing the 2001 UN Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS. Click here to download the resolution.

The UK Project has chosen "Keep the Promise" as its main theme for 2005/06. We intend to play a key role in promoting the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS as an advocacy tool to hold the UK government accountable and secure actions.

We intend to be a key actor in the civil society's efforts to affect how the Declaration of Commitment is implemented in the UK. Through our work, we also aim to promote the Declaration's promises to support vulnerable and high-risk groups especially prisoners, injecting drug users, and people working in prostitution:

  • We have developed fact files on the UK and Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS;
  • The Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on AIDS (APPGA) has tabled, at our request, an Early Day Motion (EDM) on the Declaration

The UK AIDS and Human Rights Project has commented on the Department of Health UNGASS interim report published in January 2006. Click here to download our submission.

Because the DH report sent to UNAIDS was not final and that only 4 civil society organisations contributed to it, we have produced a Shadow Report which has been sent to UNAIDS and the UN Secretary-General. Click here to download a copy of the Shadow Report.

We are happy to support and contribute to other UNGASS Projects.
