SECTION TITLE: AIDS & Education Project

The AIDS and Education Project is the educational component of the UK Project. It is aimed at the general public and young people. The rational for the Education Project is three-fold:

  • HIV-related violations of human rights can be the consequences of actions by individuals. Because of misinformation, prejudice, taboos and irrational fears, individuals can act in ways which abuse and violate the fundamental rights of people living with, affected by, and/or vulnerable to HIV.
  • People living with HIV need to know about their rights and what they can do if they have been violated either by the government or by an individual.
  • Young people are especially vulnerable to HIV. They must get adequate information about HIV transmission but they must also be given an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to HIV-related human rights by providing them with motivation, inspiration and resources to undertake creative and crucial action to promote respect for human rights.

Our aims are:

  • To raise the public's awareness of HIV-related rights;
  • To provide people whose HIV-related rights may have been violated with accessible legal information especially around the rights under the Human Rights Act and the European Convention on Human Rights; and
  • To educate young people about HIV and get them involved in the fight against HIV-related human rights violations by developing campaign and educational activities.

Some of our anticipated activities include the production of fact files to educate the public about HIV and human rights, materials aiming to provide an easily understood guide to the Human Rights Act for people whose HIV-related rights have been violated; and the development of a Toolkit specifically designed for young people.

We have already produced HIV-awareness raising resources for young people with our partner the Global AIDS Rainbow Trust. These materials aim to provide young people with key information about HIV and ideas on how to discuss related issues such as condom use and peer pressure more openly.
